The Dread of Winter, By Therese Howe:

"In the winer, everyone feels their skin is drying," says Anita Henry, owner of Rouge, a beauty boutique and spa in historic Leesburg.  That's because with the lower humidity indoors and out, the skin is unable to rehydrate itself.  And even though long, hot showers may help soothe nerves jangled by fighting the crowds at the mall or managing the stress of family gatherings, that wintertime luxury further dries out your body's outer layer.
...Besides the flaky and itchy conditions that signal dry skin, an ashy complexion also is a sign that it's time to exfoliate, or strip away the dead cells that are blocking a new, radiant you.
"If you have layers of dead skin, you could use the most expensive moisturizer and it still wouldn't penetrate the layers," Henry says.  Facial exfoliations are among the most popular treatments at many spas, including her donwtown Leesburg boutique.  "On a snowy day we're all booked because they need a reprieve from the cold," Henry notes.
While some beauty experts recommend a facial every six weeks, the minimum should be four times a year--around the time the seasons change.
...For any age and any time of the year, "the best anti-aging protection is a moisturizer with sunscreen," says Rouge's Henry, who has worked as a beauty consultant and makeup artist and whose own skin radiates throughout the seasons.  Her facial skin care regimen includes Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel, DDF Dramatic Radiance TRF Cream and Jack Black Energizing Scrub with vitamin C and menthol.  Althouh you'll find the last product in the men's section of the shop, she favors its "perfectly sized grains" for exfoliating purposes.
For the rest of the body, some of the shop's best sellers include DDF's Glycolic Body Lotion and an olive oil body butter.  And in terms of spa treatments to exfoliate and rehydrate, what's good for the face is good for the body.  Rouge offers a full package in which a scrub is used to polish the entire body, a mask is applied to acne-prone areas, and a moisturizing mask finishes the treatment.
